N.C. Research Campus Catalyst Group Symposium (April 15, 2013)

The N.C. Research Campus Catalyst Group, a consortium of faculty and staff from multiple campus partners including the Plants for Human Health Institute, is hosting a campus-wide research symposium on Monday, April 15, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the DHMRI events room. The event will feature guest speaker Dr. John Finley (USDA-ARS), a poster contest and panel discussions.

Submit abstracts by Monday, April 8, for the poster competition. Prizes will be awarded.

2:15 PM Keynote Talk – Dr. John W. Finley (USDA)

Dr. John W. Finley is the National Program Leader for the Program in Human Nutrition, USDA-ARS. He earned his PhD in Animal Science – Nutrition from Washington State University and subsequently spent sixteen years at the USDA-ARS Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center in Grand Forks, N.D. Much of his research focused on understanding the interactions between agricultural production, food technology and human nutritional needs at the molecular, cellular and human level. Finley has also worked as biology teacher at the high school and university level, as regulatory director for a food ingredients manufacturer, and served a detail with the FDA-Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Finley’s current interest is in integrating all aspects of the food system to allow for better understanding of how to approach nutrition-related problems/policy, and to allow for a more health-centered approach to agricultural productions. Finley is a member of the American Society for Nutrition and the American Chemical Society, and he has authored or co-authored more than 100 journal articles, book chapters and patents.
