Indigenous to Uzbekistan, the leaves and shoots of Ajuga turkestanica are traditionally dried and steeped in hot water creating a broth for treatment of heart disease, muscle aches and stomach aches. Muscle aches can be associated with muscle injury and the muscle repair process is dependent on specific cell signals. When muscle tissue is aged or damaged cell signaling can be weakened.
Ajuga turkestanica extract is rich in phytoecdysteroids. Phytoecdysteroids are anti-inflammatory and can decrease cellular stress. Our study found that the phytoecdysteroids in Ajuga turkestanica extract have the ability to increase components involved with cellular signaling of pathways for muscle repair. Phytoecdysteroids have demonstrated the ability to increase muscle strength and mass. Our research showed that Ajuga turkestanica extract activated carbohydrate metabolism and protein synthesis stimulating an increase in muscle mass.
