NC MarketReady

N.C. MarketReady is the Cooperative Extension outreach of the Plants for Human Health Institute. Like all N.C. Cooperative Extension programs, N.C. MarketReady brings practical applications of science-based research to the people of North Carolina. Specifically, our multidisciplinary team builds partnerships and educational resources to enhance the profitability of N.C. agriculture and promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Meet The Produce LadyThe face of The Produce Lady program is Brenda Sutton, N.C. Cooperative Extension director in Rockingham County. Brenda grew up on a farm in eastern Wake County and developed a love for good, home-grown food as a child. Good quality, local foods are her passion and she loves sharing healthy, nutritious ways to select, store, prepare and preserve foods from the local farmers market. She’s all about easy, no-nonsense tips that help people incorporate more fresh produce into their diets.

The idea for The Produce Lady program was that of Leah Chester-Davis, director of communications, with the Plants for Human Health Institute and the N.C. MarketReady program. Leah also grew up on a farm and shares a love of fresh fruits and vegetables and other farm-raised products. She invited Brenda to become “The Produce Lady” and to appear in a series of videos about  North Carolina fruits and vegetables and other local food products. In 2010, Leah received a grant from the N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.  The program has expanded to include a website, recipes, blog, food demonstrations at farmers markets and other events, printed materials and YouTube and Facebook pages.
