NC Cooperative Extension

The N.C. Cooperative Extension Service houses a multidisciplinary group of professionals at the N.C. Research Campus as part of the Plants for Human Health Institute. Providing expertise in farm business management, communications and marketing, and fresh produce safety, these Cooperative Extension staff serve as an outreach component to complement the research conducted at PHHI.

The Extension Business Toolkit is a series of information sheets designed to provide a quick overview of business planning basics. Some of the topics addressed in the tool kit include: Having an Entrepreneurial Mindset, Marketing Basics, Farm Record-Keeping and Guide to Writing a Business Plan.

    Dr. Mike Walden, a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor and Extension Economist with N.C. State University, compiles economic figures and facts regarding North Carolina’s agriculture and agribusiness industries in the following resources:

  • Piedmont Farm School
    This is a seven-month educational and outreach program that trains beginning and transitioning farmers. The program is designed to help them operate successful small-scale, sustainable farms. The school involves students from Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Iredell, Montgomery, Randolph and Rowan counties.
  • Rural Tax Education
    This website provides agricultural producers and Extension educators with a source for agriculturally-related tax information that is both current and easy to understand. Visitors can find peer-reviewed materials about income tax topics for agricultural producers and operations. This site is a project of the National Farm Income Tax Extension Committee (NFITEC).
